About

Current activities

Scott Nichol is a researcher in Theme D and Section Leader at Geoscience Australia for Marine and Antarctic Geoscience. In these roles, he provides science leadership within Project D1 - National Data Collation, Synthesis & Visualisation and Project D3 - Evaluating and monitoring the status of marine biodiversity assets on the continental shelf.

Background

Scott is a coastal geomorphologist and sedimentologist with 30 years experience in marine geoscience research. Research themes include stratigraphic reconstruction of modern coastal and shallow marine depositional systems, interaction of physical and biological processes, and the impacts of extreme events and human activity on sedimentation processes. He has maintained a strong emphasis on field-based empirical and interdisciplinary research, with published studies from projects in Australia, New Zealand, Canada, USA, Ireland, Maldives and Antarctica.

Employment History:

2007 – present: Senior Geoscientist (Geomorphologist), Geoscience Australia.

1993 – 2007: Lecturer (1993-1999) and Senior Lecturer (2000-2007), School of Geography, Geology & Environmental Science, University of Auckland, New Zealand.

1991 – 1992: Postdoctoral Research Fellow, Department of Earth Sciences, Dalhousie University, Nova Scotia, Canada.

Academic qualifications
