Current activities

  • The economics of offsets in the marine environment
  • Non-market valuation of marine ecological assets

Background

Dr Sean Pascoe is a marine resource economist with over 25 years of experience in the economic analysis of fisheries. Prior to join CSIRO in 2006, Dr Pascoe was Professor of Natural Resource Economics and Director of the Centre for the Economics and Management of Aquatic Resources (CEMARE), University of Portsmouth, UK. His work in the UK focused on management of UK and European fisheries, particularly the small scale multi-species, multi-gear inshore fisheries of the English Channel. Since returning to Australia, Dr Pascoe has worked with several key Australian fisheries. This has included assessment of maximum economic yield in fisheries, spatial management (including modelling fisher location choice), as well as multicriteria decision analysis and elicitation of social, economic and environmental objectives of management. More recently he has worked in the area of the economics of marine biodiversity conservation, including the assessment of offsets and economic valuation of the impacts of coral bleaching. In 2009, he was the recipient of a CSIRO medal for research excellence, and in 2012 was awarded the Newton Turner Award for exceptional senior scientists. He is also currently an Adjunct Professor at the Queensland University of Technology, where he supervises a number of PhD and honours students working in the area of fisheries, aquaculture and marine biodiversity conservation economics.
