About

Current activities

Currently, within NESP I am part of a team interested in better understanding the nation-wide risk to large marine animals from shipping and boating activities.  In particular we are concerned with the dangers of animals being struck by vessels and ocean noise. Within the project I am mainly focused on the mapping of shipping/boating density and the estimation of risk.

Background

I am a statistician with a strong application and computational focus. Over the past 20 years I have worked in a wide range of application areas, for example mining, medical, population genetics, fisheries and marine mammal research.  This work ranged from sitting in a nice office doing statistical analysis and software development to trying to sleep in a destroyed tent in Antarctica waiting for our whale survey aircraft to return.

Academic qualifications

University of Queensland
Doctor of Philosophy (PhD), Statistics
1994-1999

University of Queensland
Bachelor of Science (BSc) Statistics, Honours
