This swathe map illustrates the broad area of shelf break, shelf-edge reef and canyon-head incisions as part NERP Hub surveys within the Flinders Marine Park in south-eastern Tasmania. Flinders Marine Park surveys were part of a NERP Hub project aimed at developing an approach to surveying the habitat and biodiversity assets of the shelf to shelf-break components of the new AMP network. As this vast area is unlikely to be surveyed in detail in the near future given the magnitude of the task the Hub project has focused on developing survey and statistical approaches to cost-effectively gain a quantitative indication of the extent and nature of various habitats within the AMP shelf zones (reef, cobble, sand, mud, canyon etc) and of the key biological assemblages they support, with a particular focus on reef associated assemblages of fishes and sessile invertebrate cover (sponges, corals etc). The partners involved included UTas, CSIRO, GA, UWA in the broader project, utilising tools such as multibeam sonar (for mapping), towed video, baited underwater video (BUV), and Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs) (for ground-truthing map products and describing the fish and invertebrate fauna. The Flinders Marine Park work involved Utas, GA and CSIRO collaboratively, utilising multibeam sonar (GA/Utas; pictured), towed video on the shelf (Utas/CSIRO) and upper slope (CSIRO), baited underwater video on the shelf (Utas), on the upper slope (CSIRO with a new BUV design), and AUV (UTas, Usyd, IMOS).
