Description: 
Gifford Marine Park, situated within the southern Coral Sea, is part of Australia’s Temperate East Network of Marine Parks located 600 kilometres off Australia’s East Coast. The region is home to a number of protected whale species, including the humpback, blue and sperm whales as well as a number of migratory seabirds. Part of the Lord Howe Seamount Chain – Gifford’s two seamounts are relict volcanoes, estimated to be over 10 million years old and formed when the Australian plate drifted north over a mantle hotspot. The Gifford seamount is amongst the largest seamounts in Australia’s marine network at more than 3 kilometres high.
