White sharks are listed as Vulnerable in Australia. Reliable estimates of their population size – and whether they are recovering since protection – are critical to developing policies that balance conservation initiatives and human-shark interaction risk management. Hub research using electronic tagging, visual surveys and advanced genetics produced the first direct estimate of Australia's eastern population size. Further studies are seeking juvenile shark habitats to better understand total numbers in the south-west.
