Mountains of marine worms find their niche in mountains of corals

Polychaete worm living on an octocoral
Deep-sea corals create habitat for other animal species on the seafloor. One catch from Investigator's beam trawl delivered 10 scale worms (Polynoidae) living on a piece of octocoral (one worm can be seen at the top of this specimen). The coral branches had grown around the worms, forming protective, tube-like structures.
